Healthcare company partners with Department of Health to provide South Africans with access to innovative healthcare
Roche South Africa delivers healthcare to over 600 000 South Africans in five years
Johannesburg, South Africa, 03 October 2019: Roche South Africa has over the course of the last five years delivered innovative healthcare solutions to over 600 000 South Africans. Roche Products (Pty) Ltd, the pharmaceutical division of the company, provides access to medicines for a wide range of illnesses – including breast cancer, lymphoma, and haemophilia while Roche Diagnostics provides access to innovative diagnostic solutions for disease management in areas such as HIV, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, and Human Papillomavirus.
Speaking at the announcement of the company’s five-year results, David Gibbons, General Manager, Roche Products (Pty) Ltd, said, “Roche has been a proud partner to South African patients and health care providers since we opened here 71 years ago. However, what we are most excited about is the future.”
Gibbons said, the company wants South African patients here to feel the benefit of the healthcare revolution,
“We are strongly committed to partnering with the Department of Health and other funders in order to find ways to overcome the financial, regulatory and legislative challenges faced in South Africa and to ensure that patients in this country can access innovative medicines and products faster than ever before. Now is the time to look at innovative solutions and fresh thinking.”
Also commenting was Sandra Orta, General Manager, Roche Diagnostics (Pty) Ltd, who said, “Over the past seven decades in South Africa, Roche has invested heavily in state-of-the-art healthcare systems, capacity building, skills development and awareness raising. The company has also provided sustainably reduced prices. We are proud of the work we have done in partnership with the health authorities, medics, patient groups and others. Now, we look forward to creating an even brighter future for South African patients by leading the fight for improved disease management and patient outcomes.”
As the world’s largest biotech company, Roche is also bringing healthcare innovation to South Africa. It is one of the country’s leading clinical trial organisations and has conducted over 150 clinical trials in South Africa since 2009. The company also annually contributes to the continued medical education of many medical specialists and nurses. Approximately 6 000 healthcare professionals have been trained in the Roche Training Center since its inauguration in 2012. The Roche Scientific Campus in South Africa was also created as a part of the company’s ongoing commitment to Africa through capacity building and skills development.
Each year, Roche supports patients, carers and the general public through awareness campaigns, advising them on how to prevent or spot the signs and symptoms of diseases at their earliest stages. Recent campaigns have included a focus on breast cancer, haemophilia and multiple sclerosis.
