NEW OPEN ACCESS APP TO BOOST CME FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND MEDICAL STUDENTS
The launch of online medical library, Medtalkz, paves the way for health professionals and medical students to stay up to date with the latest research and findings within the medical field, regardless of their location.
This open access platform hosts a repository of lectures and presentations across all fields of medicine, delivered by South Africa’s finest medical minds. Through Medtalkz, a non-profit initiative, this information is then freely accessible to doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and medical students.
A key driver of the initiative, Dr Brian Levy, believes that staying current with up to date information is critical to health professionals wishing to better their service to the people they treat.
“Although South Africa has an active CME landscape though conferences, lectures and symposia and the like, those who would benefit most from this education are often unable to access it due to resource, time or geographical constraints”, he said.
To ensure that content is relevant and of a high quality, all presentations and lectures are screened by abstract submission before being loaded on to the site. Content is then catalogued according to various search criteria to ensure ease of access for users.
Lectures and presentations, which are recorded live to achieve a slide presentation with a synchronised voice over, are uploaded and stored on the site in video format. Registered users are able to stream the content they wish to view at any time, but to protect the presenter’s intellectual property, content cannot be downloaded or saved.
Levy urges academics and health professionals to share their expertise by recording lectures and presentations on to the Medtalkz platform thereby helping to nurture a culture of ongoing medical education.
“In turn, Medtalkz will be able to preserve the country’s esteemed legacy of medical academics by storing and safeguarding this valuable learning material for access now and into the future”, he concluded.
