3M COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF ACELITY, INC.

Acquisition Expands Presence in Advanced and Surgical Wound Care Across Markets

Johannesburg, 03 February 2020 – 3M has recently completed its previously announced acquisition of Acelity, Inc., and its KCI™ subsidiaries worldwide. Acelity is a leading global medical technology company focused on advanced wound care and specialty surgical applications marketed under the KCI™ brand.

“This announcement is a demonstration of our commitment to the success and future potential for the company’s expansion strategy on a global scale – In this way, we prepare and position our company for long-term success across all our markets,” said Robert Nichols, Managing Director 3M Middle-East and Africa Region. “This acquisition bolsters our ability of delivering comprehensive health care solutions as we further accelerate 3M as a leader in advanced wound care.”

In 2016, Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies welcomed the R120-million investment by 3M to expand its operations in South Africa. The recent acquisition is yet another initiative to further demonstrate 3M’s commitment to its business, including South Africa as a regional manufacturing hub.

Following the transaction, KCI™ will become part of 3M’s Medical Solutions Division, focused on applying 3M technologies to deliver safe and effective solutions to improve clinical outcomes and healthcare economics. The business offers a range of integrated solutions that include advanced and acute wound care dressings and products, medical tapes, sterilization products, and patient prep and warming products. These solutions cross the entire continuum of care, enabling better outcomes, improving the patient experience, and delivering strong economic value in today’s value-based care environment.

The Acelity business is well known for creating and growing new segments based on the ability to identify and address unmet clinical needs with products that advance the practice of medicine, beginning with the introduction of V.A.C.® Therapy – ground-breaking Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. The KCI™ product offering also includes advanced wound dressings and negative pressure surgical solutions. KCI’s™ solutions contribute to better patient outcomes by enhancing wound healing.

Laszlo Svinger, Regional Business Leader – Health Care Business Group for 3M Middle-East and Africa also commented, “The acquisition will allow 3M Health Care Business Group to take advantage of KCI’s™ global network and local market expertise, providing scale and reach as we expand our mission of providing comprehensive solutions to redefine what’s possible in healthcare and improving lives.”

KCI’s approximately 4 500 employees worldwide will be part of the Medical Solutions Division (MSD), within the Health Care Business Group. There are no immediate changes for customers, distributors, group purchasing organizations or key opinion leaders. During this time, it is “business as usual” for KCI and 3M MSD businesses.

Charl Louw, Managing Director Acelity South Africa and Sub Sahara Africa: “We are very excited with these 2 great and leading companies coming together with such strengths. 3M’s science, trusted brand, comprehensive solutions and global reach with KCI’s™ offerings and patient-focused technologies provides significant benefits to our customers.”

“3M strives to live up to its reputation as an innovation company that never stops inventing, whether this is by pursuing acquisitions or continuing to explore new opportunities in Africa. Having been present for more than 40 years in South Africa and 10 years in the North Africa region, the continent has been and continues to be a key priority for 3M,” concludes Nichols.
