Saving sight: Preventing blindness in rural communities

Over 80% of people in South Africa with visual impairments live in rural communities. In most cases, the impairments are completely treatable – but access to specialist diagnosis and treatment is limited. At the 2023 Ophthalmological Society of South Africa conference, medical volunteering organisation Tshemba Foundation announced its plans to kickstart a blindness prevention programme. The non-profit is calling on ophthalmologists and optometrists to volunteer through their organisation, to help give sight back to rural South Africa.
